If you are into being frugal and saving money as most new parents try to be, considering the cost of baby wipes may even factor in. After all there are enough expenses with diapers, formula and plently of other things, why not cut the cost any place you can? There is a great recipe for making your own baby wipes, it is not only much more cost effective but they are great in comparison to the heartiest of name brand baby wipes.
Let's just figure for a moment how much the average box of national brand wipes cost. Remember we will compare apples to apples. A leading brand box of wipes will average around four dollars for a box of 80 count. Suppose you buy a box every two weeks. This would average out in a years time to around 90 to one hundred dollars annually. Now say for instance you buy the name brand papertowels for the best results along with the leading name in baby oil and soap. Average the papertowels at $1.50 a roll for a one hundred count and the soap and oil at around $2.00 a bottle, presuming the bottles will last one year. The cost of the container to store them in should average around five dollars. So figuring in all that and comparing it to the same amount as store bought you should be at about 1/4 of the cost. Not a bad savings when you consider it as a whole.
Now that you are convinced of the the money saved the recipe is needed of course. First you need to purchase a 10 cup cylindrical rubbermaid container with a lid. You can find these at most any discount store. Next find the big roll of a leading brand paper towel such as Bounty. The small rolls will not work. You will also need a large bottle of baby oil and a large bottle of baby wash. Make sure to buy one that is antibacterial as some of the brands are not and have actually been known to make the wipes moldy.
Once you have acquired all the ingredients you are ready to begin. Take the roll of paper towels and cut it in half. An electric fillet knife works well to cut through all the layers. Next remove the cardboard centers. Place the one half in the container and save the other half for the next batch. In a seperate container mix 2/3 cup of water with one tablespoon of baby soap and one tablespoon of the oil. Pour the mixture over the towels and put the lid on. Turn container upside down and let the liquid absorb into the towels thouroughly. This may take a while to get done.
Now you are ready to use the homemade wipes, just reach into the center where you removed the cardboard and pull out the wipe and tear. If you feel that they are too dry you can add a bit more water to the mixture. These should work just as well as the store bought brand and save you lots of money.
